SUNY Poly: A Freshman Review
Two more weeks until we all can finally return home. I don’t know about you guys, but I am excited. I am eager to go home, sleep on my bed, and play my video games on my TV at my house again. I especially miss eating food from home, since the food out here is expensive, especially when ordering out. But most importantly, I miss my family. I miss seeing them every day when they or I walk in the door and smell the food.
This is a great school, though a few changes would be beneficial. To start, food pricing. It costs $6 for a quesadilla in the Student Center, but if I went to any local Spanish deli or restaurant, I could probably get two of those for that same price. For that price, I'd rather order McDonald’s than get Student Center food. I love the food, don’t get me wrong. The burrito bowls, oh my god, that stuff is amazing. The Philly cheesesteaks and burgers are also amazing. While I love the food in the Student Center, the pricing should change.
The clubs here are also good, though I think the student life would benefit from a football team or club. It would be great since we have a huge field near the fieldhouse where the soccer teams play, lacrosse team plays, etc. It would be great for many people if we get a football club/team.
Besides all that though, I met some cool people out here and one of them is going to be my roommate for the next semester. This man is a great guy, grew up in the same area, wonderful personality. He is from the Dominican Republic and probably the best person I know in this school. Overall, the people are not all bad, everyone has a personality unique to them, and the environment is relaxed.
Both the education and campus at SUNY Poly are good. The one thing I would change is Donovan Hall. Finding the classrooms and bathrooms is like walking through a maze. I have to walk to the other side of the hall to look for the bathroom, next thing you know, it is right there. The structure of the Student Center is confusing. Kunsela, on the other hand, is probably the easiest building to navigate, with easily locatable restrooms. The classrooms are nice. I initially thought it would be like the movies where there are a bunch of desks spread out in the room and a chalkboard in the front, but it isn’t like that at all. I was surprised to see that, and it was a good surprise; I am glad that the rooms are different than the movies since everyone is not so isolated from each other.
All in all, SUNY Poly is a good university, with good people. The food is a bit overpriced, but I still love the food. The buildings are great. The dorms aren't problematic, unless you find yourself a bad roommate then that is a different story, I can tell you from personal experience. As much as I like SUNY Poly, I am excited to go home and sit on my wonderful couch, watch TV as well, and hopefully, land a job so I can get some cash flowing.
